A Guide to Cannabis Shopping in Massachusetts

Shopping for cannabis in Massachusetts is exciting, especially because of how much the industry has grown since its start. With a wide range of products, dispensaries, and regulations, it helps to have a clear understanding of how things work before you step through the door. Keep reading as we walk you through everything you need to know about shopping for cannabis in the Commonwealth.

Know the Basics: Legal Guidelines

Who Can Shop: Age & ID Requirements

To purchase cannabis in Massachusetts, you must be 21 or older and present a valid, government-issued ID. No exceptions! Medical patients under 21 with a valid Massachusetts Medical Use of Marijuana Program (MMP) card are also permitted to purchase cannabis.

Purchase Limits

Recreational consumers can purchase and carry up to 1 ounce (28.5 g). At home, you can store up to 10 ounces, but anything over 1 ounce must be locked up. Registered medical patients are allowed to purchase up to 10 ounces every 60 days.

What You Can & Can’t Do in Massachusetts

  • Consumption: Smoking, vaping, or eating cannabis is not allowed in public places, including sidewalks, parks, and any location where tobacco use is prohibited. Medical patients may face clarifying rules when it comes to public parks, but regulations are under review.
  • Transportation: If you are traveling with cannabis, it must be kept in a sealed container and stored in the trunk or a locked glove compartment. Keeping an open container in the passenger area can result in a fine of up to $500.
  • Home Grow: Those 21 and over can cultivate up to 6 cannabis plants at home. If more than one person wants to grow cannabis, there can’t be more than 12 plants per household. Medical patients are allowed up to 12 flowering and 12 vegetative plants.
  • Crossing State Lines: Transporting cannabis out of state or by mail is illegal, even if you’re traveling to places where cannabis is legal.

What to Expect on Your First Dispensary Visit

If you’ve never stepped foot inside a dispensary before, we get it, it can feel a little intimidating. But don’t worry, we’ve got your back. This is what you can expect from your first (or any!) visit to the dispensary.

Check-In is Simple

When you arrive, you’ll need to show a valid, government-issued ID that confirms you’re 21 or older. If you’re a medical patient, bring your Massachusetts medical card too. After a quick check-in at the front desk, you’ll be invited inside to browse or chat with a team member. Your call!

Questions You Might Want to Ask

Not sure where to start? Here are a few questions that can spark the right conversation:

  • What’s a good option for relaxing at night?
  • I don’t want to smoke. What else can I try?
  • What’s the difference between THC and CBD?
  • What’s the most beginner-friendly edible?

No question is too small or too silly. This is your experience, and budtenders are here to help you make the most of it.

Types of Cannabis Products You’ll Find

Walking into a Massachusetts dispensary opens up a whole world of cannabis options, but here’s what you’ll typically find on the menu:

  • Flower: Available in a wide range of strains with different aromas and effects.
  • Pre-rolls: Convenient, ready-to-go joints for an effortless experience.
  • Edibles: Anything from gummies to chocolate to beverages to baked goods. Great for longer-lasting effects.
  • Vapes: Discreet, fast-acting, and ideal for on-the-go.
  • Concentrates: For more experienced users, these offer high potency in forms like wax, shatter, and live resin.
  • Tinctures & Capsules: Measured dosing, longer-lasting, and easy to incorporate into a wellness routine.
  • Topicals: Creams, balms, and patches for localized relief without the high.

Not all cannabis hits the same, and that’s a good thing. If you’re aiming for relaxation, a boost of energy, or enhanced focus, ask about strains or products formulated to support those goals.

While THC content grabs attention, cannabinoids like CBD or CBG, and especially terpenes, are what truly shape your experience. Terpenes influence flavor, aroma, and effects, so if you want something citrusy and uplifting, or earthy and calming, let your nose (and our budtenders) be your guide.

Payment, Packaging, & Pickup

Shopping smart also means knowing how to navigate the logistics. Here’s what to expect when you’re ready to check out:

  • Cash is King (but Debit Works Too): Due to federal regulations, most dispensaries operate as cash-only, but many offer cashless ATM options at the register. Just a heads-up: those might come with a small transaction fee.
  • Child-Proof Packaging is a Must: Massachusetts requires all cannabis products to be sealed in child-resistant packaging, and you’ll also receive an exit bag for extra safety and discretion. Hold on to it so you can use it next time.
  • Online Ordering & Pickup: Many dispensaries (including Mayflower) offer online menus for easy browsing and in-store or curbside pickup, making your experience even more convenient. Just order ahead, show your ID at pickup, and you’re good to go.
